Holiday Ideas

Mistletoe

Hang mistletoe under your front door and at your office.
You can buy plastic mistletoe at a fabrics store or the real deal at a
flower shop. Remember that the plant is very poisonous for animals and
small children.

Add some red Drape some red ribbon
down from your chandeliers. The added pop of color can dress up a room
making it festive.

Holiday Cards

A fun way to decorate with all those holiday cards is to
grab some twig and with clothes pins you can dangle your cards in a

unique way.

Fireplace

! Buying some cranberry twigs and putting them in different
size vases can take a fireplace and turn it into a creative holiday
setting.

With 2011 wrapping up I am reflecting on the past 12
months and want you to know how I value your continued business,
referrals and support. This year has been very successful for Michele
McCarthy Interiors. We had a big year starting off with moving downtown.
It’s amazing how I forgot how good it feels to start fresh in a new
space. I’m constantly helping clients to achieve that new room feel so
it was nice to personally feel and see the benefits that changing space
provides.

New Year’s Eve Host Presents

I was recently turned on to the following fun host
presents:

Root 1 Wine

You can snatch a bottle of this Chilean wine for only
$12 at Publix or your local liquor store. The bottle is beautiful and
it’s a great wine for the price.

Corkcicle

This is a
great way to always have your wine chilled to perfection. Simply put
the corkcicle in the freezer and then replace the original cork after
it’s frozen for the chilliest wine every time. You can get this great
present from Granada Gourmet.

2012 Design Forecast

I continue to see natural materials like bamboo, wood
and rocks in the industry of interior design for 2012. This trend has
longevity due to its easy application in floors, furniture and walls. I
recommend maximizing your natural feel by adding pops of natural color
to any room like meadow green or sky blue or set up a consultation to
touch and feel the amazing wallpaper I rave about all the time.
Wallpaper (wall coverings) isn’t what they used to be. The look and
feel is very hip and now.

I’m also seeing
more eclectic design in the forecast for 2012. A concept that began in
the 20th century, eclectic design was originally used as a symbol of
wealth and prosperity. This trend is being seen in 2012 designs and is
a crowd pleaser because of its rich culture, art and traditions it may
combine. Modern style meets traditional D for 2012.

This is a perfect time of year to create a mental (or physical) wish list
of design changes or additions you would like for your space for the New
Year. Whether it’s rearranging an outdoor patio set, adding wallpaper to
a powder room, turning a closet into a work station or making your garage
functional, write down a list of changes you want to make and stay
focused on them. By knowing what you want for the New Year, it will be

Paula’s Peeps – A Gorgeous Day

On Saturday, October 22 we took to the streets and walked in honor and

memory of breast cancer survivors. With a sea of pink and decorated

bras, we were among nearly 10,000 walkers making strides against breast

cancer. Thank you to all who supported our team who raised over $700.

Remember 1 out of 4 women develop breast cancer in their life. Get

checked and continue to support ways to eradicate breast cancer.

Decorating with Accessories – what’s too much?

So often I see an overwhelming amount of accessories and

while I believe style and design is a personal choice overdoing it can

be a decorating mistake. Instead of setting out knick knacks like you

saw in your grandmother’s house growing up, I recommend clean, simple

gatherings of like items showcased to build a story out of your space.

One of the pictures to the right shows a combination of earth tone

colors and the organic feel provided by seashells and orchids. This

combination, although there are several pieces, creates a well told

story rather than a visual disturbance. {See

Thanksgiving Place Setting Ideas – Wow your guests

We are officially in the hustle and bustle of the

beginning of the holiday season. This is my favorite time of year full

of comfort, color and festivities.

When decorating your table don’t worry about the table looking

appropriate for brunch, for fall or any specific time. Just make it

pretty.

Mix and match patterns; there are no rules.

Keep centerpieces low enough for guests to see each other across the

table.

Don’t be limited by an object’s intended purpose. (Use a tureen for a

centerpiece.)

Change things up from time to time; put some away, get others out and

move the rest around. Don’t let anything become static.

Develop your own style by observing the best-people with a great sense

of style as well as books about design and design elements.

Follow these leads and ! you will develop your own style.

Trendy Ideas for Ceilings & Fireplaces
Fall is officially here even though it may not feel like it. With the new season on mind I thought I would feature ideas to make your fireplace stand out. See ideas below that will really give your entire room a facelift.

I also was inspired recently when working on a ceiling for a client. I have always said the ceiling is the fifth wall. There is so much you can do with a ceiling that will give a fresh new feel to a space.

Continuing Education – REVIT

Currently I am continuing my education by taking the new autocad course, Revit. One of the features of the program is that it allows interior designers to scan a hand drawn sketch into a computer and in minutes it creates a professional 3D model.

The Interview

I was asked some interesting questions lately during an interview and thought that it would be good to share in my monthly e-Newsletter.

How would you describe your design style?

I like to think that all my work has a sophistication and intelligence to it without being too serious. I wouldn’t necessarily characterize it as being of any particular style or period. Architecturally, I’m more of a classicist, but I tend to like timeless design and quality craftsmanship and execution, whether traditional or modern. My interiors tend to include a mix of pieces and in conjunction with the furnishings I design, they create an energized, spirited environment. Thankfully, my clients and projects range so much that my interiors really vary, keeping things very interesting for me.

How has your design aesthetic changed in the last 10 years? My design horizon is always expanding. I’m always interested in exploring new architectural and decorative solutions, new materials and new products. My designs have become increasingly complex, with more emphasis on the layering of textures and finishes, and even greater attention to the details.

	Was there any lesson you learned early on in your career that has stuck with you? Surround yourself with people you respect, which take pride in the work they do, and care for one another. It’s ok to say “I don’t know”. Listen first, then think, then respond or I at least clarify that I’m brainstorming out loud.

How do you go about assessing a client’s/project’s needs?

I believe strongly in spending time getting to know my clients, their children and families. We have many meetings early on to discuss the project and to understand how they live today, what their ideas are for the future and how they envision living in their new spaces.

What is your method for combining antiques and new pieces together?

It’s not so much a method but a consideration of many elements: scale, proportion, weight, color, tonality and form. Sometimes, this is instinctual and sometimes trial and error comes into play. It’s exciting to discover when things work really well together. Furniture matchmaking!

What is the ultimate goal of all your projects?

To create a relationship with my clients based on trust.

To create a comfortable, open environment for real communication so that the design process can take place smoothly.

To make a positive difference in how my clients live.

To challenge myself creatively and produce work I’m proud of.

With summer almost here we are spending more and more time outside. Your back and front yards are a great extension of your home. You should want to entertain outside just as much as inside. Organic Look – Still Alive and Well Many of you remember me discussing the look of last year was all things organic. This season I am seeing even more designers choose organic styles to add a flowing environment to any home inside or out. Consultation Made Simple I was recently hired by a local Ormond Beach doctor to reorganize his living space. After a 2 hour consultation I moved all his furniture from his living room to his sitting room, changed the direction of his bed, moved a few chairs and paintings and voila it completely changed the entire look and feel of his gorgeous golf course Floridian home.

So often I see clients struggle with making design decisions. Some feel there are rules keeping furniture flush with walls or lining up a painting perfect with the top of a window. One of my favorite design quotes is “The only rule is there are no rules. Create your own!” If you are not happy in your home environment contact me today. The New Edition There are so many great things being accomplished at Michele McCarthy Interiors. 2010 came and went so quickly. Read on to hear about all the fabulous improvements and changes that have been made including new website, new spring colors and more.
Downtown Daytona Being a woman-owned business I was able to receive several benefits for moving my business to the Downtown Daytona area. I’m proud to be a new business supporting downtown.
High Five The high five monthly shout out goes to Craig Wells with Peninsula Capitol. I recently heard that he gives his employees an extra 30 minutes of lunch each work day if they walk to lunch. This not only encourages promotion of downtown business but it provides the balance I feel one needs to get through a long work day. The fresh air, exercise and employee camaraderie make for a healthy lifestyle.

Spring 2011 Infusion of Color There is a big shift in the current trend in color. This season expect to see fresh color palettes and lots of texture. Chunky linens and textured wool are still top textiles Satin, velvet and mohair will be seen more often Warmer autumn tones and rich desert hues bring a vibrant new palette. Think spicy red, cognac brown, berry wine and smoky lilac. Gray is still the top color trend as well as a cool blue. Metallics are moving into spectrums of bronze. This season is sure to thrill.
